BATCH GUEYE

Description of image

Batch is a West-African Griot, a storyteller through his music and dance. His mother, grandmother, and those before them had been singers and dancers. Singing BayeFall chants is where Batch found his voice. Batch's songs are about life experiences: about travel, immigration, places he has lived in and people he met and is grateful to. His songs have important messages for the community: know who you are, understand and respect others, be generous, trust and have faith in life. Batch sings his songs in the Senegalese language Wolof. However, language does not obstruct his music. The passion Batch has can be heard in his soulful voice and understood by all.

Batch's energy as a dancer is as vibrant and colourful as the patchwork clothes of his BayeFall people. Like his music, his dance style is a collection of both traditional and modern African cultures, and his combination of strong and fast movement promises to be a striking display. In 2012, M’Beugel won the World Music Network's Battle of the Bands competition: “The Best African Music You’ve Never Heard”. In 2012, Batch released his first EP. In 2014, Batch released his first album Ndiarigne (four star review by Songlines). In 2015, Batch featured in BBC Earth Africa’s Fishing Leopards, narrated by Sir David Attenborough (nominated as Best Independent Sync of the Year) and viewed 39 Million times by 2024. In 2017, Batch released his second album Xamle. In 2019, Batch released his third album Moytou. In 2020, Batch released his first Afrobeat album Do you hear me? and World music album In this New Land. In 2021, Batch received the prestigious award “Best Artist in the Diaspora” at Raaya Music Awards.Batch Gueye is also the founder and CEO of Sabar Family, a company and movement which celebrates West African dance, music, art, and culture, in collaboration with some of the best Senegalese artists across the diaspora. In 2022, Sabar Family received funding from Arts Council UK to lead singing and Baye Fall chanting workshops, drumming groups, dance workshops and story-telling across the UK, with free mentorship for black youth.
